Forego collecting any membership dues for 2022Dear Members,
We trust that you are doing well during these "interesting" times and that all is well with you. It was recently suggested that our Club should forego collecting membership dues for the 2022 year because we have been unable to hold any events during the pandemic lock-down. We put this question to the Board. READ MORE |
To our members: We would like to encourage you to consider receiving the Newsletter via e-mail to reduce our printing and mailing costs which are a substantial expense. In the next newsletter, there will be a questionnaire in this regard. Whatever your decision, you would be able to change it at any time. Thank you for your consideration.

Ole Madsen
December 4, 1939 - September 25, 2021
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ole Madsen. Ole passed away peacefully, age 81, with his daughters by his side.
Ole was the loving husband of Anna Marie, to whom he was married for 47 years, and caring father to Stine and Lene, his two daughters. Ole was also the proud grandfather (Morfar) of Misha and Luca, who each take after him in different ways.
Ole immigrated from Denmark to Canada in 1967, eventually making his way to British Columbia, the province that became his home. Apart from his family, Ole's joys included jazz music, non-fiction books, Galiano Island, wood-turning and sweets.

Svend-Aage Kristiansen
July 24, 1929 - January 11, 2018
Born in Outrup By, Jutland and was a Master Butcher
He and Ingeborg immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1958. They worked hard but loved being in nature; fishing, hunting and gold-panning among other things.
They returned to Denmark once, where they ran a very successful hotel business, but missed Canada.
Svend and Ingeborg were married for 66 years and worked as a team through all the years in their own deli, butcher shop and restaurant businesses in Sidney and Victoria, before retiring to Nanaimo.
Ingeborg wishes to thank everyone for the cards, flowers and well-wishes she has received after Svend's passing.
He will be missed very much by all.
Ære være hans minde

Labour Day, September 4th: The Federation of Danish Associations Pacific Regional Meeting was held at Henny and John's beautiful house in Chemainus. In total there were 26 Danish members from Vancouver and Victoria. Plus 13 of our own members here in Nanaimo.
After a lengthy meeting, a delicious lunch was served by Henny. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed sitting outside looking out on the water before it was time to go home again.

Flag Parade on Canada Day 2018
Saturday, July 1st: Vibeke Sandberg proudly carried our Danish Flag in the parade of many different nationalities' flags in downtown Nanaimo. It was Canada's 150th Anniversary on Saturday, July 1st, and the weather was beautiful and sunny. Many people were there to enjoy the day in Mafeo-Sutton Park by Nanaimo's waterfront park.
Extraordinary Senior of the Year 2018
We thought we should also mention that Emil Sorensen is 90 years old, he cycles 10 km each way to volunteer 80 hours per week at Vancouver Island University! Wow!
Hi everyone - I am very proud to announce that my father, club member Emil Sorensen, won the 'Extraordinary Senior of the Year' award. The award is sponsored by the Alzheimer's Association of BC, the PNE and corporate partner Retirement Concepts. His nomination included letters of support from a Dean and several Instructors at VIU. He was selected as winner out of 20 final nominees from throughout BC.
He was given his award by the CEO of the PNE, Chief Operating Officer of Retirement Concepts and CEO of Alzheimer's Association on Thursday at a ceremony (on Senior's Day) at the PNE in front of 5000+ people. He gave a wonderful acceptance speech. Organizers had a professional photographer on site and they have posted a few of the photos on their respective facebook pages. I have included links to their postings on FB and a couple of photos that I took.
