Our member Ane Kirstine Street (nee Nielsen) sent this:
We bought a house in the Cedar area at the end of Brix Road about 6 years ago. My husband Dave came over early and supervised some renovations while I continued to work in Vancouver until the summer of 2016. He is a retired Lithographer and I am a retired Legal Assistant. My father's family (Dad passed away in 2015), the Nielsen's, are from the Grenaa area but my 2 remaining uncles and cousins are spread all around Denmark.
I enjoyed the Christmas Party and the many new friends we met this past year. We were lucky enough to sit at the same table as Arne Brix who developed our subdivision in Cedar over 40 years ago!
Also, at our table, we sat with two more Nielsen girls, Dagny Nielsen and Birthe Graugaard (nee Nielsen). What a small world! Dagny told me that she and her husband had been pioneers at hosting some of the first Danish Canadian parties in this part of Vancouver Island.

We are sad to say goodbye to:
July 24, 1929 - January 11, 2018
Born in Outrup By, Jutland and was a Master Butcher
He and Ingeborg immigrated to Edmonton, Alberta in 1958. They worked hard but loved being in nature; fishing, hunting and gold-panning among other things.
They returned to Denmark once, where they ran a very successful hotel business, but missed Canada.
Svend and Ingeborg were married for 66 years and worked as a team through all the years in their own deli, butcher shop and restaurant businesses in Sidney and Victoria, before retiring to Nanaimo.
Ingeborg wishes to thank everyone for the cards, flowers and well-wishes she has received after Svend's passing.
He will be missed very much by all.
Ære være hans minde

Saturday, July 1st: Vibeke Sandberg proudly carried our Danish Flag in the parade of many different nationalities' flags in downtown Nanaimo. It was Canada's 150th Anniversary on Saturday, July 1st, and the weather was beautiful and sunny. Many people were there to enjoy the day in Mafeo-Sutton Park by Nanaimo's waterfront park.
Labour Day, September 4th: The Federation of Danish Associations Pacific Regional Meeting was held at Henny and John's beautiful house in Chemainus. In total there were 26 Danish members from Vancouver and Victoria. Plus 13 of our own members here in Nanaimo.
After a lengthy meeting, a delicious lunch was served by Henny. The weather was beautiful and we enjoyed sitting outside looking out on the water before it was time to go home again.
